Sony Music celebrates International Women’s Day with Women Connect
Sony Music hosted a celebratory event last night in collaboration with Women Connect, ahead of International Women’s Day 2020 on Sunday 8th March.
The evening was dedicated to honouring the successes of women, both in the creative industries and the wider working world.
Speakers included Steph Ijoma, founder of NNE SAGA, one of UK’s leading diverse entertainment platforms championing gaming, comics and anime culture. Jen Davis, an ex-Parliamentary staffer and the creator and co-host of the Consensus podcast, also spoke at the event.
Artist Izzy Bizu, signed to Sony’s RCA record label, treated guests to a special live performance to round off the evening.
Sony Music’s association with Women Connect grew out of its internal staff committee, What If?, which champions grassroots ideas to drive progress and make change.
This is the second event to have been sparked via What If? in recent weeks, following an evening in recognition and celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month on 27th February.
Run by Sony’s Freedom LGBTQ+ group, named after George Michael, the panel discussion featured Kenny Ethan Jones, a trans activist, entrepreneur and model, Jamie Windust, LGBTQIA+ Editor in Chief, writer and model, Sharan Dhaliwal, creator of Burnt Roti magazine and Jamie Ahye, co-founder of Pride in Music and Senior Marketing Manager at Atlantic Records.
The discussion centred around the theme of visibility and erasure throughout LGBTQ+ history. Speaking about how he would like this period of time in queer history to be remembered in the future, Jamie Ahye said, “The time that through brilliant trans voices, we make massive strides forward in equality and acceptance.”
